Summary of Takeaway Impressions
Woody is a seasoned entrepreneur with a strong ability to focus his presentation and outline a vision for strategic business growth.Ā In under 30 minutes, he was able to expertly articulate growth potential for Autio, along with key product features and partnership strategies. The core pitch takeaway is Autioās potential for subscriber growth at the intersection of multiple marketplaces, including travel, entertainment and education. However, from an investorsā point of view, Woody can improve his presentation by honing in Autioās potential to generate future outcomes in the following areas: (1) define a key social outcome (mission) and north star (core purpose), (2) using the north star as a compass, better identify the core TAM (intersectional vs. adjacent), (3) clarify the core customer base target, explain that customerās journey and how Autio either redirects or unlocks customer desires, and (4) explain customer-centric growth strategies to complement and/or balance existing enterprise-focused growth strategies. Stylistically, two key areas for improvement lie in engagement (storytelling) and resonance (communicating the Autio values).
Addressable Improvement Areas
- Company Purpose & Mission - What is the north star? Is it education, is it entertainment, is it community?
šPossible Action Steps:
- If storytelling is a core element of Autioās purpose, the team should reflect this. Adding a female chief storyteller/CMO is an example of signaling commitment to that purpose.
- Total Addressable Market - If the product is capturing market share in multiple industries (e.g. travel, entertainment, and education) then it would make sense to clarify the TAM in light of those verticals. What is the beachhead market for Autio? If itās travel, it would be easier to understand Autioās value in light of how it interacts within the travel industry. Investors should want to know if that is the market where CAC and CLV are highest relative to the companyās purpose.
šPossible Action Steps:
- Identify the trends and/or fastest growing user segments within your core market (e.g. millennials who travel by car) and identify how Autio is uniquely positioned to capitalize on that growth trend.
- Aligning Company with Customer Persona - The pitch doesnāt clearly articulate how Autio is delivering value on dimensions [a large population of target] customers care about. From the pitch, it wasnāt clear that Autio has identified and refined the product to reflect demands from users. For example, if users are clamoring to contribute to content, you might have the beginnings of a UGC platform.
šPossible Action Steps:
- Identify the feedback loops between Autio and its key, target user base more clearly.
- Are there stories that customers want to hear that havenāt been told yet on your platform (for example, there are millions of units of content on Youtube and cable networks with relevant engagement metrics that contain celebrity/influencer recommendations and stories about places)
- Brand Strategy - There are two key areas where asymmetry show up in the Autio presentation: growth strategy and visual identity. As Woody explained in his pitch, Autioās growth strategy is focused primarily in the enterprise space (e.g. auto and OTA partnerships), which establishes dependence on platforms (see SiriusXM as deploying similar strategy), but leaves a majority of B2C community driven, organic and sustainable growth opportunities on the table. For a product that sells directly to end users, the reason for this lack of symmetry in growth strategy is not yet clear. Additionally, the visual identity of Autio renders a discernment problem. What is the brandās personality? How does this reflect the mission of Autio? What about the visual identity makes Autio memorable?
šPossible Action Steps:
- Incorporate a timeline into your pitch that provides investors with more clarity on how Autio is aligning its growth with the demands of its key subscriber base
